Hi, I'm Cody.

You could say my love for publishing started early—standing in line as a kid at midnight book releases, marveling not just at the story in my hands but at the invisible army of people who helped bring it into the world. Long before I knew what an editor actually did, I was fascinated by the behind-the-scenes collaboration of every finished book.

I began my career in journalism, where I learned quickly that words have weight. Space is limited. Clarity matters. Voice isn’t optional—it’s everything. Perhaps most importantly, I learned that strong writing doesn’t happen in isolation; it’s shaped through thoughtful feedback, trust, and collaboration. Those lessons have stayed with me and continue to inform how I work with authors today.

I am the son of a screenwriter father and a book-loving mother, so language was always part of the background music of my life. I’ve always loved learning and editing has become the place where that curiosity thrives. Every manuscript teaches me something new—about language, about storytelling, about how other people see the world.

Today, I work as a professional copyeditor specializing in fiction and nonfiction, helping authors refine their work at the sentence level. I care deeply about the mechanics of writing—grammar, syntax, punctuation, consistency, and style—not as rigid rules, but as tools that support clarity and trust between writer and reader. My goal is never to overwrite an author’s voice, but to help it come through cleanly, confidently, and without distraction.

I am a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) and a co-coordinator of the San Diego chapter, where I’m passionate about demystifying the often invisible work editors do. Editing, at its best, is a labor of love—quiet, precise, and intentional. When it’s done well, most readers won’t notice it at all. But both writers and readers will feel the difference.

When I’m not editing, I’m usually doing the same things that make me a good editor: noticing patterns in the world, constantly asking questions, always suggesting improvements (much to my husband’s delight), and paying attention to the small details that make all the difference. I believe kindness and precision can—and should—coexist, and that the best editorial relationships are built on those very traits, as well as trust and respect.

If you’re looking for an editor who’s attentive, thoughtful, and genuinely invested in helping your work shine, I’d love to hear more about your project.
